French baskets are really catching on, gaining popularity not only in Europe but also in the US and other parts of the world. French baskets and bags come in a large variety of styles and cater to many needs. They can be used as grocery or shopping bags, they come in handy on trips to the market or beach, and they can be used as fashion accessories and are alternatives to almost every type of bag. Manufacturers of French baskets are becoming innovative with the designs and shapes. French baskets, as the name suggests, originated in France. These baskets traditionally use natural substances. French baskets are usually made from palm leaves. Sometimes grass or water reeds are also employed in the making. Many French baskets do use leather but true handmade French basket only uses leather that has been treated by a natural process. French baskets are not necessarily made in France. The French often import the baskets from different parts of the globe. Most often, the good quality baskets we see in the market today have been made in places outside France.

Morocco is one of the popular places from where French baskets are imported. The Moroccan weaving is sturdy and a great deal of attention is given to details. Because the baskets are handmade, most of the time only approximate measurements can be provided to the buyers. Each basket is distinct because of this reason.

To make the palm leaves flexible, the person weaving the French baskets often use green leaves. The leaves are also lightly wet for the same purpose. Once the work is done, it is dried. When you get a new basket, you might be able to detect the natural smell that comes from the green leaves. But with usage the smell will disappear.

French baskets are easy to take care of. They can be washed easily with water and if needed, a little soap. They can then be dried in the open air, in sun. They are thus hassle-free. When the French baskets come with leather straps, make sure to use only leather compatible soaps on it.

French baskets combine beauty and nature and make a great accessory for you but perhaps most importantly they can aid in the reduction of plastic bag usage in the world.
